“Show me the money!” “Here’s looking at you, kid.” “Go ahead, make my day.” “May the Force be with you.” “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Movie lines can sometimes be more recognisable than the movies they appear in. Here are 4 examples of commercials which feature lines from movies in an attempt to create a campaign that is just as memorable as the phrases included.

Show me the Mini!

Year: 2014
Client: Pepsi
Creative Agency: Mekanism

Pepsi gave the mini can a huge stage when premiering this commercial during the 86th Academy Awards. The commercial named ‘Mini Hollywood’ showcases over 15 iconic movie lines in a clever film studio scene. We see memorable lines from movies such as Titanic, Taxi Driver, Scarface, Terminator, The Wizard of Oz and Caddyshack. The grand finale reveals actor Cuba Gooding Jr. screaming ‘Show me the Mini’, a reference to the new Pepsi mini and the famous line his character screamed over the phone in movie Jerry Maguire.

You Talkin’ to Me?

Year: 2005
Client: Toyota

One movie line features in all 4 of the commercials listed here, and in case you haven’t guessed – it’s ‘You Talkin’ to Me?’ from Taxi Driver. The line was first heard in the 1976 movie Taxi Driver by Robert De Niro’s character Travis Bickle and is one of the most memorable and referenced phrases in pop culture. In this Toyota commercial we see a range of characters recreating the Taxi Driver scene where the world famous quote is heard.

Or Are You Talkin’ to Her?

Year: 2010
Client: Bing
Creative Agency: JWT New York

Bing, Microsofts answer to Google, launched a campaign aimed to position their service as the cure for digital information overload. Demonstrating an example of search-results clutter, we see the main character in this commercial unable to have a normal conversation without steering it off course. The memorable movie line ‘You Talkin’ To Me?’ from Taxi Driver is featured which adds to the hilarity of the spot.

A Blockbuster Commercial

Year: 2007
Client: Blockbuster

This is a similar concept to the Pepsi commercial, where a new scene is created using only memorable movie lines. Instead of a movie set, we see what seems to be a family gathering – a HUGE family gathering. Lines in this 30 second commercial have been taken from films such as Jaws, Crocodile Dundee, Terminator, When Harry Met Sally, A Streetcar Named Desire and Lord of the Rings. A total of 35 movie references can be counted if watched very carefully!
