Tis’ the season for Christmas themed advertising, and this year once again we were presented with some phenomenal campaigns.

We open with the Sky Movies Christmas campaign, ‘The Mission’, which was filmed in Budapest. Here we see a young girl who finds herself in a number of blockbuster movies after not wanting to eat her sprouts. It very cleverly integrates her storyline into some well known movie scenes as she tries to rid herself of the green balls of ‘YUK!’. The size of the production was of a blockbuster scale, with plenty of impressive special effects. The costume designer searched high and low for the right costumes for the Cinderella scene, and eventually found what she needed in a Madrid costume store. Due to the competitive nature of advertising around Christmas, all of those involved were required to sign an NDA. However that didn’t stop an extra from uploading a happy snap of himself in costume on to Instagram which was almost disastrous. This is a wonderful example of how well known and loved movie properties can be leveraged in an advertising campaign.

Also in November Christmas campaigns we’ve seen existing footage from the classic animation ‘The Snowman’ in ASDA’s advertising and ‘The Morecambe & Wise Show’ in M&S’. TalkTalk also used existing footage from classic Christmas movies like ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ to tell a little story during their campaign.

Moving on from Christmas, and a new campaign for Warburtons is being considered a late comer to potentially being UK advertising campaign of the year. They’re no stranger in leveraging Hollywood in their advertising, having recruited Sylvester Stallone in their previous activities. After a lot of hype and advertising around who will be their celebrity endorsement this year, it was finally announced that the characters from ‘The Muppet Show’ will be the stars in 2015. The whopping £25m campaign is the companies biggest in history.

In other news, Mr. T is back in advertising again – this time for Fairfield Hotels, fool! This month we also saw Kevin Spacey as his House of Cards character Frank Underwood in the Alibaba campaign urging customers to make the most of singles day.

Lastly, and one more to add to the previous lot of Star Wars campaigns, we see a cute spot developed by BBDO New York for HP. Another way of thinking outside of the box when it comes to an iconic movie property.
